Since the 1950's, plastic piping has been used in many industrial and residential buildings as well as irrigation and sewers. It is easier to work with and cheaper than metal piping and so it is a favorite of many contractors. There are two main types of plastic piping, PVC and HDPE. Each has some advantages. If you are considering using plastic piping for your next project it is important to know the differences between the two so that you can choose the type that best suits your needs. They are sometimes paired with a
flow center
PVC is perhaps the better known of the two. It is a rigid pipe which gives it strength but also makes it a bit brittle and susceptible to cracking. It is light and so can be transported in long lengths or large diameters. It is very tolerant of temperature extremes and can even be used where temperatures reach -40 Celsius.
When compared to metal pipes PVC is more likely to remain free flowing. It does not rust or build up scale on its walls so there is no risk of clogging due to these things. This plastic is somewhat susceptible to scratching though which leads to the potential of clogs due to debris getting caught on the rough walls.
HDPE piping is more flexible than PVC but just as strong. The increased flexibility means that it can be used in areas where vibrations are an issue without fear of it fracturing. Although it can withstand higher temperatures as well as other plastic piping it can not stand up to extreme cold. It is only considered safe to use where the temperature is not likely to drop below zero degrees Celsius.
It is as resistant to rust and corrosion as PVC but does not scratch very easily. This reduces the chances of a clog due to build up of debris. The interiors of these pipes will stay smooth keeping the flow rate high.
Perhaps the most significant difference between these two types of plastic pipes is in their effects on the environment. PVC piping uses both chlorine and dioxin in its manufacture. Both of these have been show to be carcinogenic. HDPE piping contains neither of these, nor any other chemical that has been show to cause cancer and so is considered more environmentally friendly.
If you are in the planning stages of a plumbing project it would be wise for you to take a bit of time looking into both PVC and HDPE piping. Once you are aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each you will be able to make an informed decision as to which will best fit your needs. Making the correct choice from the outset will save you time, energy and money.
